Prevention versus Cure

It often amazes me that so many seem to take great care & pride in looking after their cars and/or houses, and yet so little attention in themselves. They may spend a small fortune in servicing their car regularly, as they know, if they don't, it will cost a lot more in the long term.

Somehow this idea rarely sinks in about their own health.

The body is the immediate environment through which we function and in which we live. But we don't tend to service or check things regularly, especially if we have no symptoms that we can no longer ignore.

It seems that we have accepted a system that tries to patch us up when we fall in a heap, with one sort of crisis or another. The irony being, that when the UK NHS was conceived after the 2nd world war, they seemed to be riding on the optimism created by the recent discovery of penicillin & a few other apparent 'wonder drugs'. In all innocence they conceived the idea that it wouldn't be long before we could 'cure' most illness & disease and then the NHS could largely focus on Preventative Medicine.

We are, of course, still waiting and it doesn't look like happening soon. With the best intentions in the world, if you base your approach on people being no more than complex mechanical & chemical machines, then I think it is going to be a struggle. Even if you add emotions, chemically/ hormonally mediated, then I still think the mission is domed to failure.

I am, of course, talking about the Modern Western approach to health & mainstream science in general.

It's Not Rocket Science!

Why is it that when 'science' meets people it all goes pear shaped?

I would suggest that the mainstream science that we get to know about is actually not that scientific!

And No! - It's not rocket science, because humans are the most complex things in the known universe.

If you look a little deeper and venture into the realms of Quantum Science & Theory you will actually find that it actually agrees with most, if not all ancient, indigenous & cultural belief systems.

So why doesn't 'science' utilise this new understanding?

  • Firstly - It's not new! Quantum Theory & Physics have also been around since soon after World War II.

  • Secondly - the only reason I can come up with for 'science' & modern medicine clinging on to Newtonian physics & the Reductionist Method - is that altruism has been neglected for power & financial gains.  I would welcome an alternative view, but the evidence to support this just keeps stacking up.

Some Ancient Wisdom

To administer medicines to diseases which have already developed and to suppress revolts which have already developed is comparable to the behaviour of those persons who begin to dig a well after they have become thirsty and of those who begin to make weapons after they have already engaged in battle. Would these actions not be be too late?

(Su Wen, Ch 2)

Traditionally in China - one pays a physician to help maintain health, as when sickness befalls, then one is unable to work & thus pay the fee.

Common sense it would seem, but relatively uncommon in the modern western world. It seems that only once the rot has set in, then we go in search of that elusive 'cure'.

Consider This

If the oil warning light in your car starts to flash, would you replace or top up the oil, or would you disconnect the bulb?

Early symptoms are a blessing in disguise. They indicate that something, somewhere is going awry. The options are:- treat the symptoms & ignore the fact that there may be an underlying problem or make a small investment now to try and address the underlying problem.

Health Insurance companies are starting to realise that investing in preventative & complimentary health is financially a better option and since when do they part with money without doing the maths first?
